Fixing the nut? (Fender Geddy Lee signature)

Sign in to disble this ad
Awhile ago I got the bright idea to put heavies on the Geddy Lee and as you can imagine, it didn't work out too well. To facilitate the new strings I had to file the nut a little bit. The G, D, and A string slots are fine but the E's slot is over filed and it cause the string to pop out of place sometimes. How can I remedy this?

The E string also has a D-tuner if that matters.

use enough wraps on the strings to keep the angle low enough to hold the string in place. (this is extra-important for the A strings on fenders.)

Also make sure that you have the nut groove filed on a downward angle to match or exceed the string angle as it breaks on the nut.

On an angled headstock. For a fender style you want the slots to be parallel to the fretboard.

To the OP --

you said you "overfiled" the slot, but the string pops out? "String pops out" sounds like the slot is too shallow. So did you file the slot too wide such that is slips side to side? If you filed it too DEEP, then it's probably the windings (as noted above) that's causing the string to slip out

Good luck!
