Fixing strap buttons.

Well the strap button on my bass came loose the other day so as usual i got a matchstick, cut it to length and then in half, inserted the two parts and put the screw back in between the two matchstick pieces and all was fine.

But is there a better way of fixing this problem or is this the way to go?

Packing the hole with toothpicks (or match sticks if you want) and wood glue is perfectly fine. As long as you let it set - it will hold pretty much forever.

I use a little better wood than a matchstick, like a good quality toothpick, or the tiniest dowel-type piece you have. The other thing I do is to use some good quality wood glue on the wood before I place into the screw hole. Let it dry thoroughly. Then seat your strap button. I've never had one come out after doing this.

Great thanks, we don't any wood glue and i have heard others can crack the wood if you put too much in so i didn't want to risk it, glad to hear I'm doing the right thing.

The glue is important - pick up some white glue next time you are at the drugstore or hardware store. It really does make a rather permanent repair.

I usually use wood filler. Seems to be holding up so far.

What I have found to be perfect is to buy a small can of wood filler. I take a very small straw (aka swizzle stick) and blow the dust out of the hold. take a flat toothpick and fill the hole with the filler. Give it an hour or so to set and then run the strap button on in. It will "lock" the threads in, but you can unscrew the button just as easily if you decide to replace the button with a strap lock.
