Fixing up/Modding my bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok, so here's my plan. I have 3 basses; a vintage viola bass, a B.C. Rich Warlock, and an off-brand
P bass. I'm currently using my Warlock as my primary bass, and was wanting to fix up my P bass to make it more desirable.
My P bass was given to me on christmas 2 years ago for me to learn. It has a short neck and the pickups suck :/.
I was planning on buying the cheapest($100-$150) P bass I could from a pawn shop, and scrap it for it's neck and pickup (Maybe the pick guard, if the color goes with my idea). I wont "destroy" the bass untill I'm completly done with everything on the other one.

So I'm planning on:
Swapping the neck - I'll be sure to make sure the measurments are the same with the basses (the original bass had a short neck)
Swap pups and pickguard - Easy stuff, I don't think I'll have a problem. The pup covers on my bass are white and I wanted to switch those over to the other pickups, Is that possible? Do they just come off? And if the pickguard is black then it should go great with my idea.
Repaint - I was also planning on striping the paint, and paining it a bright white, and have my friend draw somthing on it (She's an amazing artist, and would it be ok to use a black sharpie and put a clear coat of paint over it?).
Possible harware swap - With the tunning knobs, saddle, and pots to black. I think it would give a different look to it (going for a black and white fusion thing i guess)
Possible modds? - I was thinking about a killswitch, I use distortion alot (with Muse and other stuff) and figure since I haven't seen one yet then why not? I have complete understanding in how a killswitch works and how to solder one on. I was also wondering about any other mods I could do?

Any and all advice is welcome. Thank you

Well, I modding a squire p bass and I thought for a minute about a varitone switch. But I'm riding the fence about it now. What do you use the killswitch for? I'm not familiar with this, what does it do?

A simple varitone circuit for your bass -

Wow, thats a pretty cheap investment, I'll be sure to add a varitone switch. If I add one will i have to lose my regular tone knob? Thanks.

A killswitch is mostly used for guitar (Tom Morello from Range Against the Machine uses one), it basicly just cuts the sound from the guitar/bass.

Here is a link to one being used (He also kinda explains it) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwKvk...eature=related

Edit: Also, how hard would it be to cut off a small part of the body? Between the small horn and the neck, the part that the neck bolts to sticks out quite a bit.
