I just recently bought a used Yamaha BB350F Fretlesss 4 string. Now the bass plays great except the open E sounds flat no sustain and low volume. the owner had changed the stock neck pickup for a Seymour Duncan STK0J1n and disconnected the bridge pickup.Alson installed a badass bridge. The reason for the bridge pickup being disconnected was he just didn't use it. Now when you play the neck it sounds great but when you play the open string low volume and sounds dead. any info would be appreciated remember it is Fretless. thanks

Different strings could help

I had a similar problem that was solved by using different strings - try different brand, model, gauge, etc.

I'm using D'Addario half-rounds on my fretless that work for me.

To go more in depth there was a recent discussion E string has no punch here you might want to look at:
E strings has no punch!!!
