Flimsy pickguard

The one failing of my Dirnt P-bass. Doesn't sit flush to the body (I'm sure more screws are in order) and just gives me a niggle re cheapness. I note that 1 ply seems to be de rigeur for 51-esque Precisions.

Logic suggests that a 3 ply plate would be stiffer and less bendy, but experience tells me that I always get things wrong.

How different are the thicknesses? I.e. are 1 ply plates made of the same stuff as each layer in a 3 ply?

Is 3 ply significantly "flatter" to warrant changing the plate?

I've no answer for you but wanted to chime in that I picked up a 51 P bass in a sam ash recently and thought the pickguard deal was ridiculous. I could keep my wallet in the gap if I wanted to. This is some of the stuff I just can't seem to get with Fender. Is it that tough to fix this problem?

PS. I only opened this thread because I had a feeling you were talkin about an early 50s P. Wasn't all that surprised to see I was right.
