Foam Mute gives a Papery Sound on my P Bass

I recently did my own setup and overall I'm happy. But I installed a piece of foam, which is quite dense, under the bridge guard. I installed it very close to the bridge itself to reduce the effect it has on the intonation. But I am noticing a bit of a papery sound, especially on the higher strings.

Any suggestions?

Try something less dense. I like my foam to be quite a bit softer than a sponge.

Styrofoam and PVC foam won't work unless you like the effect.

Neoprene is the foam of choice. Sounds like you got a plastic-foam instead of a rubbery one.
