Hi there ive finally had enough and have decided to consult the internets

Ok problem im having is on every single one of my basses (i have 2 american p basses and a charvel custom shop star bass) The trouble is that i pretty much have a dead fret on mainly the 7th fret of g and occasionally 5th and 6th fret on every bass i have tried adjusting truss rod and bridge ect some times its not as bad as others but its always ther to a certain degree... Can any one shed some light on my situation cus ive had enough cant be arsed to practice any more because every time i hit that fret i wanna throw the bass out of the window

It seems to me that your neck is bent outwards a bit (too straight), I would recommend to loosen truss rod about 1/8 turn counter-clockwise and raise height of the strings a little.

Hmmm i have already explored that approach with my Charvel and it didnt seem to have any effect it already has a quite loose truss rod at the moment as i have put thicker guage strings on and havent yet adjusted the rod to compencate. Any other ideas and why is it only ever the g string every other string is fine

If you can't fix it on your own, get a pro to fix it. While he's at it he can level and dress the frets for you at the same time.

I think you can afford $40.00-80.00 for a pro set up then

1) Fret level
2) Crown job
3) Fret buffing
And finaly a good set up to your style of playing
Will cost you around $100 by a luthier or a good repair man

hmmm ok ill give u a slight history on the basses

P bass no 1: ive owned for about 3 years had it professionally twice has had this problem off and on for about 2 years

P bass no 2: ive only owned this for about 3 months set it up myself and had it from new it has only recently started doing this (seemed to be when the strings were dying havent changed strings yet as im waiting on a badass bridge to arrive). Ive set this bass up many different ways to try it out see what works best for me.

Charvel: recently had this set up frets everything done proper job by a very skilled luthier local to me and the probem went away for abit and has recently come back (even when it wasnt really there i think i could still feel it very very slightly). Only thing i can say is that i have put thicker gauge strings on and neck has bent a little dont have the right truss rod tool to adjust it at the minute but the problem was occuring before i changed strings

This is why i came on here hoping it was a regular problem, only thing i can say is that i play bass fairly agressive with finger maiden style triplets and what not also all these basses are maple/maple p basses are 20 fret charvel is 21.

I just cant seem to get my head around it if i had to give a reason of what i thought was happening i would say the necks are twisting slightly but it seems to me abit strange that it would be happening to all of the basses other wise it would be plausable. Any one have any ideas i dont think theres much information i can give you

You just have some uneven frets - a VERY common problem, no matter how cheap or expensive an instrument is. I would recommend taking it to a COMPETENT tech for a fret level and setup. This is a fairly intense, skilled job, and I wouldn't recommend trying this at home.

get the frets leveled, dressed they are unequal height be the sounds of it. shouldn't be too much dough. it happens on even the best guitars every once in awhile. even 5/1000ths of an inch can make the difference.

Hmmm theres no chance it could be just dead frets due to all the harmonics stuff is it just that it seems to get worse when i play the bass for a while

I was going to mention that the 7th fret of the G string, is often a problem, esp. Fender-style basses.
