Fret Buzz on B STRING

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been trying to play a song called Blackest Eyes, by porcupine tree and half the song is using the B string.

My B string sounds extremely slooppy, and this ruins the song. What should I change in the bass' bridge to only change the b string's set up ?

When I play the open b string, it sounds fine, but when I press from around the 1st to 7th fret (maybe a bit more) the string hits the frets.

Thanks,
Awake DT

~~bump~~

What exactly should I do? I don't have experience calibrating basses and don't want to risk the way I have it set up right now (the other 5 strings)

Get it to a professional for a set-up if u don't feel comfortable to do it yourself.

I would like to do it myself. The only "professional" here in panama sucks and he charges a load of money for any silly job.

3 things I can recommend:

1: set up (as mentioned above)

2: string guage. I'd go with at least a .130 B string and go with hexcore strings as opposed to round core. Makes a big difference on the B string.

3. Raise the saddle heigth under the B string just enough until that fret buzz goes away. Don't do it too much or you'll really hate playing that string. Just enough to raise the action a hair.

Generally speaking, if strings buzz in the lower register, it needs a truss rod adjustment (loosen). If buzzing is in the higher register, it generally means a string height adjustment is on order.

In this case, since it is only the B that is buzzing, I would first look at the nut and make sure the string is seated 'properly'.

Then I would do as recommended by another member and try raising the B-string height at the saddle just enough to make it stop.

Then, if the neck has a dual truss rod (two individual rods, not a dual action single rod), I would loosen the one on the B side a bit. Actually, I would probably do that right off the bat, but if you are unfamiliar with the process, you should probably try the other things first. Truss rod adjustments can be tricky, especially when balancing two of them.

If all else fails, also as mentioned previously, have it set up by a local pro. The nut may need to be filed, a fret leveled, any number of things.
