Fret Buzz on Fretless

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I've just got a fretless Tokai Jazz Sound and it's got a great tone and plays well. Only problem seems to be a buzz at the 'harmonic' points on the board.

If I fret at the 12th, for instance, I get quite a loud rattle which disappears if I slide either up or down the neck. Similar at the 7th. Is this a general issue with fretless or can anyone suggest a setup change which may eliminate the problem.

Only other modification which tempts me is to lower the strings at the nut as it seems quite high and fretting at the first fret needs strength and the intonation is also out.

I've never had that problem with any properly set up fretless, so I don't think it's a general issue. I know I can get some pretty horrid sounds out of a fretless until I get the action set up right. I think you just need to do some fooling around until you get it handled.

If the action seems too high at the first fret you will need to slot the nut a bit lower as you said. Check that there isn't too much relief in the neck and that the neck angle isn't too far off. It may need a shim.
