Fret Buzz/Nut Question

Sign in to disble this ad
I just picked up a Fender MIM Precision off of Ebay and there's a slight fret buzz on the A and D strings. When I apply some pressure to the strings behind the nut, the buzz goes away. Is this a fret issue or a nut issue? Thanks.

When does fretbuzz happen? Open only? Lower registers? Mid-neck? Only near the bridge?

It seems to be only on the first fret, and it goes away when I apply some down pressure on the string just north of the nut.

Pretty common for Fenders to buzz the open A if the string isn't wound 'low' enough on the tuning peg. D? Fret at the 2nd and tap over the 1st-should be just a tiny bit of clearance. Check that and report back.

I gave it a quick, temporary fix by applying a "paper shim" to the nut. Looking at the strings from a side view as they pass over the nut on the north side I can see why this would be a common problem...the A string has the least amount of down pressure of the 4 strings. Any such device as a 3-string tree that would be mounted laterally to the E tuning peg?
