Fret buzz recently after full setup...

Sign in to disble this ad
Not 3 months ago I had my MIM Fender Jazz fully set up, and a new set of Rotosound roundwounds, and have been having some problems recently.

Last week I noticed a bit of buzzing high up on the G string, 16/17th fret area.

Now I get buzz from the 11-19th fret on the G string, 12-19th on the D string, and 16-17th on the A string. E is fine... for now.

I'm not 100% sure what the problem is, but it might have something to do with the following:

I keep my bass stored at night on a stand-up stand. I transport it in a soft gigbag in a back seat of a car twice a week. I live in a remodelled attic at the moment so it can get a bit on the humid side.

Any ideas? It's really frustrating, especially after just recently paying a bunch for a full setup and strings and such.

Note: I'm not experienced with using the truss rod, and the last time I used it was on my old bass, and that made things worse.

Humidity changes + the start of summertime weather = minor adjustments.

Don't be afraid of the truss rod. Just remember that a little bit goes a long way. No more than a quarter turn at a time.

As stated, minor truss rod adjustments now and then are not uncommon. You might also invest in a good, hardshell case for transport and storage as it may minimize climatic effects, as opposed to the guitar stand and gig bag...

Remember to try adjusting the heights on the bridge saddles also.
It's best to experiment with small tweakings and learn how to
do these things yourself.
No one knows just how you like it best, except you...

I've kind of neglected tweaking it and been playing my Yamaha since, (been busy too), but I'm going to have a go with it again tomorrow.

Now for the truss rod tweaks, should I loosen or tighten? It was set up in the winter, and humidity got to it, and I'm not sure what I need to do.

With all due respect, a set up that is 90 days old is ancient history. There is a lot that can happen in that amount of time. Fret wear, string wear, loose adjusting screws, and who knows what else all can surface in that amount of time. This is compounded by the fact that it was set up in the beginning of the spring when the weather is changing. If the instrument did not have some issues in July, that would be news.

First thing to do is measure the relief. Refer to the sticky at the top of the forum if you don't know how to do it. Post your findings and the folks here will show you the way.

I agree . . .

if the bridge height adustment (set) screws WEREN'T fixed with nail polish (or loktite), THAT could be causing the´problem . . .

But the changing weather is more likely the 'cause.
