Question Fret Job?

Sign in to disble this ad
Anyone here ever buy a mid priced bass preferably a Fender and need to get the frets leveled, crowned, and polished?
If so how was the turn out?
Were you able to get the action the way you wanted without fret rattle or buzz?
Please elighten me. I put my MIM Jazz V Deluxe in the shop because I couldn't make my neck straighter due to fret rattle on the E string at the 6th and 8th frets. So I had to set it up with a tad of extra relief which was a little more than I like. A lousy 1/4 turn clockwise brought the rattle back. The tolerance was so tight that it left no cushion room for neck options.
If I lowered the saddles With the extra relief in the neck then I got fret buzz in the upper registers. My saddles were pretty low to boot as well, the G saddle was on the floor. I hope the fret job solves my problem. What do you guys think?

I have had to level and crown a few Fender P and J basses bought new to get the action right. Usually it was just a few high frets. That was a few years ago. I think Fender may be doing a better job these days with all the competition out there, where you can get a $300 Asian made bass with flawless fretwork. Haven't done anything on a Fender 5 string though.

The fret job you're getting done may solve the problem. I would try a very thin shim at the body end of the neck to alter the neck angle a tad. Then take out a bit of relief and lower the string saddles.
