Fret leveling questions.

Sign in to disble this ad
So I decided to try my hand at fret leveling. Dont worry I'm using some old no name necks to start on. Anyway I've got a few questions. I'm using Dan Erlewines article from bassplayer magazine. Here's a link:
http://www.bassplayer.com/article/le...s/jul-06/22006

1. Here's my first question. When beading the glue in, should I wipe the exess off immediately or wait till it dries? I'm guessing immediately. Also is it necessary to do both sides of the fret or just one?

2. I bought a heavy duty aluminum straightedge and notched it to go over the frets. Is it possible to get the neck perfectly straight? I use Dan's clamping technique to get the neck straight but everytime I still have the slightest bit of relief under a fret or two in the middle of the neck. Is this ok or should I keep fiddling around till its dead straight?

Thats it for now. Can any of you guys help me? Thanks!

Flood both sides of the fret with liquid thin CA.

Try to get the neck as straight as possible in the playing position. You may find that in trying to eliminate the last few thousandths in the center of the neck (F6-9?) that you will force the neck into the beginnings of a back bow. It will show between F1 and the nut. If so, back off until the back bow disappears. Call that the zero point for the neck. Fingerboard straightness can be dealt with at a later date when the neck is being refretted.
