Fret problem(?)

Is it a problem that there's space between the end/bottom of the tang and the wood? I can easily push a needle way under the tang on almost any fret along the neck's downside.
The bass (Ibanez GWB2) has a weak and strange sounding G-string (overtones that creates a phasing kind of sound). Could this lack of contact between fret-tang and wood be the problem?

If it is that consistent, it doesn't sound like a "defect", per-se, but instead just the way that bass was fretted.

My MIM Fender was about like that, but I've since sealed the fret-ends to avoid taking-in moisture (most were already sealed). My Ibanez is actually sealed much better, but it wouldn't surprise me if the fret-wire didn't bottom-out in the slots.

I would suggest sealing the fret-ends (wax or superglue?) to avoid taking-on moisture.
