Alright, so I'm taking a stab at de-fretting. Read all the posts/how-to stickys (thanks to all who contribute). The hot iron works great. A little tap-tap with a SMALL hammer to get just under the corner of the fret with a sharpend putty knife, and then gently pulled the rest of the way with modified end cutters. Works like a dream. Almost no chipping and didn't bend any of the old frets. Oh, I should also add that I oiled the board the night before.I made a radius sanding block by holding a piece of sand paper face up on the fingerboard, sanding a piece of scrap wood untill it matched the radius perfectly. I wasn't real satisfied cleaning the crap out of the old grooves with a utility knife when it dawned on me that an old round-wound guitar string would work great without slicing myself as well as making all the grooves consistent.(.022)
Now I'm off to the plastics place to find some sutible filler (I never did figure out what "crazy carpet was) I think I would like to keep the natural rosewood look/sound/feel, but I also love them round-wounds. So any suggestions on hardeners or sealers would be appreiciated.
Thanks again to all who contribute! I'm a noob here picking it up after a 15 year detour.I'm having a total blast doing this and hope to give a little back. |
