Fret Sprout; repair methodologies?

Sign in to disble this ad
First off, I'm unsure if there's a common term for the condition. It's when the fingerboard wood gets less wide (wide meaning across the fingerboard from E to G) in winter due to the wood drying & contracting.

Surprised I haven't seen any inquiries about this already, but what methods & tools do you folks use to remedy this issue?

1. Leveling file is run carefully along the edge of the neck/binding to trim and level the frets to the the neck edge.
2. Super fine three corner file is used to polish the bevel.
3. SFTC file (or nut seating file) is used to remove picky little burrs left from trimming
4. Micromesh to entire fret, paying attention to the new bevel.
5. Micromesh to polish out any scratches left from initial filing.

N.B. If any lacquer chips out it can be touched up with nitro (for nitro finishes) or superglue (all of the polys). Trim and level is the same for the fret ends. Do this before polishing the bevel.
