Fretboard Separating from neck at nut

Sign in to disble this ad
So I picked up an Ibanez SR3005 today from GC. got it at a stupid good price, it needs some work, but this is the biggest problem with it. As the title states, the fretboard has pulled away from the neck a little bit at the nut. I talked to the tech at Third Coast and he quoted me $75 to fix it. I'm kinda thinking about just doing it myself with some slow setting epoxy and a C-clamp. My only concern is that I have never done this before and I don't want to mess anything up. Should I just take it in or attempt it myself?

You answered your own question. This is one project that should be left to the pro's.

One has to wonder why the fingerboard is separating at the nut. It may be that the trussrod is pushing up on the underside of the board, in which case this may not be an easy repair. I have that problem with a MIM Fender Jazz.

Best have someone well-qualified look at it and determine the cause.

Good advice.

On another note... did you buy this used or new? Any warranty come with this purchase?

"I don't want to mess it up", and "slow setting epoxy", mean that you need to take this to someone who knows what he's doing. Epoxy, misused, can turn what would have been a minor repair into one godawful mess.

The bass is used, no warranty. This is a repair I'd like to learn to do, I just wasn't sure if It was one of those that I probably shouldn't do on this bass. Anyway, thanks for all the input. I'll just take it in to the shop, I'd rather not risk anything with this one.
