Fretless bridge setup question

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey everyone
I've got a Squier VM fretless and basically, to adjust my intonation to be right on the line, it seems like I have to crank the saddles very far back on the bridge... Is this normal? I've been observing other peoples' bridge setups and it seems like their saddles are set more outward (towards the pickups)..

The intonation IS good though.. That's what troubles me. The middle of the line on my fretboard is smack dab where the in-tune note is and that's exactly what I wanted.. but the problem is I feel like the saddle is so far back that it looks like its choking the string and possibly screwing with the tension on it or something. I don't know! Even if that's not the case, if I wanted to go and change the intonation on the E string, the saddle is so far back and TIGHT that I'd strip the screw if I tried.

I should clarify.. The A, D, and G strings are not necessarily choked at the saddle. The saddles are how they should be: the E saddle being closest to the back of the bridge and the G being the furthest in the ascending positions. It's mostly the E saddle I'm worried about.

Can someone enlighten me on this? It doesn't seem right!

How's the intonation when you compare an open string with the 12th fret harmonic?

If you've set the intonation so your fingers sit directly on top of the line then yes, your saddles will be toward the back end of the bridge to intone that. I tend to set mine so the intonation is slightly behind the line, as you finger on a fretted, so the saddles are quite far forward on the bridge. Are your fingers flattening out fretting on the board? That can be a bit deceiving.
