Fretless Fingerboard Repair

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a ~1990 Tobias Classic 5 with a pau ferro fingerboard. The board has two or three spots that cause the string to buzz. If I move my finger just a bit up or down the neck the buzz goes away. Mostly A and D string but some on E and G. I figure there is a bit of a depression at those spots.

It's probably time to get the neck sanded/resurfaced/planed/whateveryoudo.

Would anyone be able to recommend a repair person in, or very close to Connecticut (New Haven) that I could bring it to for this?

I am not taking sandpaper to this thing by myself.

You'd increase your audience by posting this in the Basses forum.

Though there are some great sources for DIY support in this one. Me, I'd grab a radiused sanding block & tune the neck up.

I had a fretless Pbass rosewood board same problem. I had to have it planed. I was told the problem was caused by the type of roundwounds I was using.

Thanks all. A thread after this one was created pointed out a repair guy right in New Haven so I'm set.

Not confident enough to go at it myself. Using Flats on it now and love them but since it's 19 years old I imagine it has seen rounds and some significant playing time.

I find using a cork block with the sanding paper around it helps keep the neck radius. DIY.

check your neck straightness...

many times folks like a buzz as it's the basics of a mwuah sound...

how bad is it.
