Fretless fingerboard shrinkage

Sign in to disble this ad
My daughter left her fretless Yamaha near the forced air heater in her dorm over winter break.

The heat and lack of humidity shrank the fingerboard enough that the wooden fret filler strips now stick out of each side of the rosewood fingerboard.

It there a way to rehydrate the fingerboard (lemon oil?) or should I just sand down the edges of the fingerboard to level the filler strips?

If I level the strips, would the fingerboard swell back to its former width in the summer so that there are gaps on the ends of the slots?

There are more experienced folk herein, but I'd sand it down; going very very gently & slowly.

The fingerboard should revert to summer dimensions when exposed to those humidity levels. I'm guessing the "fret fillers" aren't exposed by very much at all, but it sure feels like they are, so they shouldn't "retract" by much come summer.
