Fretless setup question

The setup on one of my fretless basses is giving me trouble.
The bass is new to me.
Neck relief seems perfect, action is great.
All the strings sound great - lovely rich mwah - except the G string, which sounds like a sitar. Totally different tonal quality.
This is a new set of DR Sunbeams, .45 to .130
With the prior strings the G also had a different tone than the other strings - I thought new strings might fix that.
Any ideas, or things I should look at in particular in the setup?

Open string only?

If so , the groove of the G string on the nut is too low.

If not only open , get the action higher and/or check the mechanics ; springs on the bridge , a loose nut (pots, plugs)

Fretted string. Checking the mechanics of the bridge makes a lot of sense. I'll start there.

If it's sitaring, then you may actually have a bit of backbow or divoting in the board. Leveling a fretless board can do wonders.
