Fretless string buzz

Sign in to disble this ad
I just picked up a Squier VM Fretless. After I adjusted the neck relief, I started getting a wicked buzz out of the open E string (but not when "fretted"). I just changed out the string as an experiment and the buzz stopped. Any ideas what's going on?

Bring it to a shop and have them take a look.
It may have been the string, but it also could have been your nut.

The E's nut slot might be too low for the gauge of the 1st string. Guessing the 2nd E is a larger gauge.

Did restoring relief to the received amount resolve the buzz?

I left the relief the same and tried an EB string of the same gauge and an identical Fender string I had lying around and no buzz. Just a bad string I guess?

Could well be just a bad string. Old & stock?

Not entirely sure what you're referring to. The bass is new and stock, the stock strings are new, and the two other strings I tried on the E are old (and one of them is identical to the new stock string).

The new string might have been of a higher tension causing the neck to bend forward JUST enough to resolve the buzz

Sorry. I was inquiring about the buzzing string.
