frets sticking out

Hi, i got this problem with my bass that seems pretty strange to me.
Here's the story. I bought through the internet this used pedulla mvp made in 1990 from bassnw. It was sent to a friend in chicago, and the bass stood in chicago untouched for 5 months. it was then sent to miami and from miami it flew to buenos aires argentina. i knew it had quite a few scratches but i was told frets were in good condition. but when i got the bass some of the frets are sort of out of place. there is a gap between the edges of the frets and the fingerboard. What i was told is that it might have been caused by the changes in temperature during the flight, depending on where it was on the plane... do you think this is possible??? or what else could have caused that???
And do you think the frets could easily be hammered into place? i'd like to save a few bucks and give it a shot, but i'm afraid i might ruin the bass. All in all it sounds great, but since some of the frets are sticking out there's quite a lot of buzz.
thanks for the help!

Not at all uncommon, particularly with all those temperature and humidity changes. DONT bang the frets in, you need to take it to a tech who use a special tool made specifically for this purpose. The frets will also probably need dressing and levelling and the bass given a good set up. Should'nt cost too much, $100 ish.
