Fretting out from 8 to 17?

Sign in to disble this ad
So i've spent ages trying to setup my mim jazz and get the right string height - i like to get a little fret buzz consistently on all frets. Ive just put in a shim because my bridge saddles were as low as they can go and werent low enough. But now my A and D strings fret out roughly between frets 8 and 17, i will hardly get a note, just a muffled metallic thump. Also any frets above or below this section dont get any fret buzz.

Is is just me or is this weird?

Your relief. Your neck is bending backwards, i believe. Needs truss rod adjustment. Or maybe your neck is not built to such tolerances to take such a low action.

Remove the shim and adjust for proper relief with the right tolerances (check Fender's website for a rough ballpark, I usually eye it but I like my action medium). If the action is still too high without insane buzz, you probably need a good fretjob.

If the neck cannot be adjusted to proper relief, add the shim back. How thick is it anyway ? and how did you shim the neck ? If you introduced an incorrect neck angle while shimming, this can cause fretting out.

Try turning your TR nut 1/4 turn ccw and see what happens.

I had just loosened the truss rod prior to give it more relief as as getting fret buzz from 1 to 5. So there is now more clearance between the fretboard and string when you depress it on both sides. But its still fretting out, mostly just on the a string.
