G&L neck problem

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a -97 G&L 2500 that got the strings tightened a lot by someone when left backstage overnight after a gig. This of course caused excessive relief, and after slackening the strings again the truss rod doesnt seem to work quite right. I am able to get acceptable relief, but had to put some washers under the truss rod nut to achieve this. It does also not seem possible to get the neck straight with the truss rod, this was not a problem before the incident. Is it possible that the truss rod have lost some of its anchoring, or is it more likely that the truss rod is bent? And should I just leave it as it is as long as I can get acceptable relief?

I wouldn't doubt the TR nut compressed the wood.

I'd slack off all the way on the strings and truss rod and let it sit for a several days. Don't get in a hurry with it

If that doesn't work the neck may need to be clamped in a fixture that gives it a slight back bow and heated with lamps for a while and let cool. This would relax and reset the wood fibers to some degree.

If neither of the above works or the bow creeps back in over time after trying these it may be time for a new neck.

good luck

Ok, thanks, how much backbow would you suggest, 2-4mm, or more?

I got a cheap Ibanez Bass on Ebay and the truss rod was completely backed off giving the neck way to much relief so I loosend the strings all the way and then tightened up the truss rod and it still was too much relief after letting it sit for a day with no tension on the strings,so again I loosened up the strings all the way and put the bass in my car on a hot summer day with the windows up thus heating up the glue on the layers of the neck and that fixed it up perfectly.
Im not sure that this is the most professional way but it worked really well.

Interesting approach, but here in Norway we dont get too many hot summer days, espesially at this time of year..
But it was very good to hear that it in fact can be possible to fix it with the heating approach. Do you know if the Ibanez neck are made in the same way as the G&L neck? The G&L as I understand are split, they then make a groove for the truss rod and glue the two halves back together again..

If you need to do the back bow and heating method, I suggest searching the Luthier's Corner.

Here's one thread I found.
