G&L Setup and Intonation, Grounding

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a slight issue with a G&L Tribby el-tookay. I've strung it up with Dunlop mediums, and the intonation adjustment screws have run out of room. More precisely, the springs are compressed to the point that the screws can't torque down any further without busing something. Am I good to take them off, or will that impair the intonation adjustment? Any place to get those nice looking chromed springs for less than a fortune?

Also, this double humbucker bass seems dead quiet in my practice space with florescent lighting, but at my guitarist's house it buzzes like it's filled with angry bees in all modes (florescent lighting).

I read somewhere that one or more modes on the bass was actually hum adding, but it seems odd that it would buzz in every position, especially since it's shielded.

Any help would be great. Pictures on request.

Have you adjusted the neck relief with the truss rod? If you trim a couple coils off the spring, you can compress the spring a little and move the saddle back. I would look up a tutorial on Youtube about adjusting the relief of the neck before you try to properly set up the action and intonate your bass.

The neck relief is set right where I like it. It's about a tenth of an inch higher than the fender setup guide recommends.

I guess the humming is what gets me the most. I've got a Jazz with Nordstrand humbucking picups coming. I'll see if that puppy is loud in the same setting.

I've removed saddle springs before when in your situation. Its no big deal, just put them somewhere where they won't get lost.

As far as buzzing goes, are you using it in active mode? The G&L control cavities are generally not well shielded, and picks up electrical noise like crazy with the pre-amp turned on. Try going passive, and see if the buzz goes away.

I'm going to shield my cavity + cavity cover at some point in the future in hopes of cutting down on the picked up noise.

Passive was just quieter, Buzzed like a hornet.

Note, I have mine modded for a single coil mode in addition to series/parallel. Single coil mode was just as bad as humbucking.
