G String Buzzes @ 7th Fret

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a 2010 4-string American Standard Precision with a maple neck and I just noticed that playing the G-string at the 7th fret buzzes loudly when I'm also fretting the 7th fret of the E-string.

This G-string buzz happens under these two conditions and is just as pronounced amped or unamped:
  • Fret both E and G strings at 7th fret and pluck only G string
  • Fret both E and G strings at 7th fret and simultaneously pluck both E and G strings

If I just mute the E-string by touching it at the 7th fret, then no G-string buzz at all when fretting G-string at 7th fret and plucking the G-string.

Fretting or muting other E-string notes seems OK (i.e. no G-string buzz).

Also, I can rather aggressively individually play each note of each of the 4 strings (i.e. walk up each string) and no buzzes anywhere.

Any thoughts?

It's probably your E string vibrating against the frets between the seventh fret and the nut. The G string fretted at the seventh produces a D note. If you fret the E string at the 7th and pluck the E string behind the fretted position (i.e. between the 7th and the nut) the note produced is a D. So what's happening is that the D produced on the G string is causing a sympathetic vibration on the back part of the E string and it's rattling on one or more frets.

Often this problem occurs when the nut slots are too low, but it can also occur if there is too little relief or a high fret or two beneath the E string at 1 to 5

Thumbs up

Thanks Turnaround, you were spot on with your diagnosis.

It was difficult to tell which string was buzzing and since I only have two hands, I wasn't able to simultaneously fret the E and G strings, and pluck the G-string, and check which string was really buzzing.

But having a helper, who could lightly mute each string as I was playing, we were quickly able to see that it's the E-string section between the nut and the 7th fret that is buzzing.

Thanks again, and now I can at least have a good explanation of the problem when I bring it in to get adjusted.
