G string buzzing

Sign in to disble this ad
After I sorted the bridge problem on my Energy;

Help! Saddle bridge problem

Now the G string won't stop buzzing! It buzzes if played slightly hard and the only frets that don't buzz are 10/11/12 and 21/22/23/24. Since the neck is graphite, there is no truss rod and adjusing the action makes no difference (unless it's stupidly high where it's unplayable). Could this be something to do with the bridge problem I had? It didn't buzz before the saddle moved, but now it does.

Help! I have a gig soon!

sounds like it may be a fret problem. might need to have them leveled.you can check this with a straightedge. if the straight edge rocks on any frets they will need to be leveled.same if you see dips.

edit: i just read the bridge thread. is the buzzing coming from the bridge? if so you might have something loose in the bridge or tuners.

Hmm, are you sure it's not something vibrating on the bass? I ask because I've experienced this with crappy tuners before, and loose parts on bridges/saddles. Certain pitches won't elicit the vibration, ie frets 10,11,12 and the same notes at 22,23, and 24.

It sounds like it might be coming from both bridge and fret but I made sure everything on the bridge was fastened securely...

It didn't buzz before so I don't think it's a fret problem.

it definately sounds like there is something loose on your bridge if it wasnt buzzing before. id try resetting the bridge.loosen string and try wiggling the saddle.also check string height posts.

Yep, those little allen screws have to BOTH (if your bridge has 2 per saddle) be snug against the base. In other words, make sure both saddle height screws are adjusted equally, or one will be loose and vibrate.

Strange...my old Status Energy 5 had a wooden neck with graphite reinforcements.

Refresh my memory...why were you adjusting the bridge in the first place? Did you reset intonation, string height, and tighten that confounded set-screw? If it was not buzzing before but is now, I would doubt if it's the neck / frets as that's the only thing you haven't touched. In other words, if you have a high, loose, whatever fret, its been there for a while. Does the buzz disappear when raising the G string?

The buzz dosen't disappear when I raise the string.
I was tightening the confounded set-screw because it had come loose. I took the screw out, readjusted the saddle (on the G string - the saddle had moved back (thread)) and put the confounded screw back in.

It might be to do with the action because when I first lowered it, that's when it started but now the buzzing dosen't go away. I have checked the bridge and everything looks secure.

sounds to me like you may have a high fret somewhere around the 12th try fretting around the 17th or higher and put your ear in back of it by the 12th see if you hear a buzzing.

+1. Certainly a possibility. I've experienced "back buzz" with any combination of the following: 1) too-straight neck, 2) overcut nut slot, 3) irregular frets, 4) new strings / gauge changes. Here's a quick way to check for back-buzz. Place a small paper shim (no thicker than 2-4 sheets in the nut's G string slot, replace the string and tune to pitch. Fret up and down the fingerboard while playing. Does the buzz remain?

I think I've sorted it now - I changed the action a bit, adjusted the intonation and put on a new string.

I have buzzing on my D string at the 17th, 18th and 19th fret. The neck looks great and action is fine?? I notice when I bend my G string towards the D string on those particular frets, it buzzes? What do you think?
