G string sucks

Sign in to disble this ad
i have been reading as many previous threads as possible and trying to search; but its real hard with a 3 letter minimumto search specifically to the g string;
this is the deal in its entirety; 35" 24 fret bass made by me;
pau ferro board with lmi nickel % frets; hipshot style a (style) bridge
labella's on this guy;and it has a zero fret; and just trust me their dressed well
3 out of the 4 strings sounds incredeible;
g string sounds like flicking the tab on a can of coke;
thought the action might be too low moved the bridge up and down no good; releived the truss rod no good; as it stands now there is a slight releif; not to the eye just straightedge;
changed the string from the 45 to a 50 to see what happens and same thing; that was a black beuty (DR)
i opened up the nut slot a little cause i heard about choking the string ; but it has a 0 fret and even then all the fretted notes are like that;
i took off all the strings as one last attack and rerecrowned the nut side of every fret to make sure i wasnt missing something, polished it up and restrung it and......
its on my wall with a crappy sounding g string;
what ive read is that the g string is kinda prone to this crap; but its a first for me, both on builds (mind you its my first 35" build or bought) and on anything ive purchased, and ive never bought a bass over 800$
so china gets it but i dont!
the only other thing i might do when i have money or is funded by a potential buyer is change the bridge to a badass or something but if that doesnt work its become a money pit.
sorry if this has been covered a million times; a link to my answer would be great aswell

Things that could be the problem:
Perhaps the G-string is buzzing on something, go through your neck and see if any of the frets are out of place, or if the bridge must be raised.
Could be a bad tuning key, I've never had one so I'm curious to see what it sounds like.
I'm going to take it since you've gone down the majority of the list that you've taken a tuner out and just tried that, sounds stupid, I know, but hey, you never know.
The last and only thing I can think of other than going through and re fretting the bass, is to replace the string entirely, and see if that helps.

try lowering the pickup. "flicking a coke tab" sounds like the string is hitting the pickup when you play it

thanks for the replies;
pickups originally were an obstruction, and it was a ''WHACK'' cause theyer active; those are way down, the g string is a lil higher than the rest because its quieter too, lots of clearence ,i'd say 1/2 " or more.
i tried replaceing the string, it was a 'coated' DR which i thought if anyhting could smooth out defects, in a trouble shooting aspect;
ive had lots of screwed up tuners, and if this one is messed up its ni a way ive never thought of, but i might try throwing a spare in there, to see what happens if i make the bold step of changing the bridge.
when i watch the strings being played it almost looks like no matter what, the last 3 strings vibrate side to side and the g string goes up and down; i think its because its so small you can see its path more clearly or somting, what it looks like i guess is like its too loose maybe? besides a longer scale (its 35") and tuning it, what else can i do?
im gonna go try just cranking on it to a C or something and see what happens;
thanx again

Sounds like the neck may not be holding relief correctly. Is the relief the same on both sides of the neck, and is it a consistant curve? You may have a warp of some kind.
