Is it firmly glued in place? If so, don't worry about it.

to mee, it looks like possibly a bad glue-job. Excess glue could be making the nut elevate, creating the gap.

Is that the gap between your nut and the floor, or your nut and your underwear/jeans? I can't help without more information...

theres a thin gap behind the nut on the head and under the nut towards the top of the wood of the fretboard. i figured it would be fine though because the strings are causing tension on the nut holding it down....am i right?

there should be no gap between the nut and the end of the fretboard wood.

if there is, that nut needs to be popped off, sanded and shaped if necessary to fit right, and re-glued tightly

Loosen the strings and you might find that the glue holding the nut in place has given up, and tuning up to pitch has pulled it towards the head.

If so, clean it up, glue it back in, then pry your glued fingers slowly away from the now attached nut...yep, I did it.

These guys knew what they were talking about. I didn't, so I said something silly. Sorry about that!

You can see from the picture that the nut is in fine, it's just too wide. (the shelf, or 'slot' is too narrow), all that's happened is that the nut protrudes beyond it's shelf and out onto the back-anlged headstock. Even if it looks a bit shonky, as long as the nut is set up ok (the leading edge on the fretboard side), that nut is going nowhere.
