there is a slight gap behind my nut and under it. is this a problem.....if it is, how do i fix it? |

I can't help without more information... | theres a thin gap behind the nut on the head and under the nut towards the top of the wood of the fretboard. i figured it would be fine though because the strings are causing tension on the nut holding it down....am i right? |

| | | | there should be no gap between the nut and the end of the fretboard wood.
if there is, that nut needs to be popped off, sanded and shaped if necessary to fit right, and re-glued tightly

If so, clean it up, glue it back in, then pry your glued fingers slowly away from the now attached nut...yep, I did it. |

(the shelf, or 'slot' is too narrow), all that's happened is that the nut protrudes beyond it's shelf and out onto the back-anlged headstock. Even if it looks a bit shonky, as long as the nut is set up ok (the leading edge on the fretboard side), that nut is going nowhere.
