Getting correct pickup height

Noobish question, but what are the signs that will tell you if your pups need to be raised or lowered? They're obviously too high if they're visibly pulling the strings down, but what are things to listen for to tell you which way they need to be adjusted?

Volume - too high or low
Style - if you are hitting them with the strings
Other than that, I've not changed mine. I just try and match volumes, but that's not always possible either.

I always do it by ear and by looking at the obvious, such as the strings touching the pickup. Adjustments are so easy to do for pickup height (or should be if the pickup is mounted properly) that it doesn't take much time at all. Then you've got it set for your playing style and your action and choice oif strings.

It's really not as big a thing to figure out as some make it out to be.
