Getting the fret feel off a defretted neck

Sign in to disble this ad
I picked up a Squier Vintage Modified Fretless Jazz last year used for a for $175, because I want to stick a decent fretless neck on one of my (lefty) basses and I couldn't find a cheap fretless neck. I'm not a fretless player per se. Although my Asbory is my go-to bass I've never played a full scale fretless so when I checked it out what I'm writing about now didn't register because it felt weird (and righty) anyway, so it wasn't my finest moment of critical examination. But it sounded very good when the seller played it, so I went for it. It was less than any neck alone I came across.

Here's the problem: it's not a fretless neck by design or one that's been defretted by pulling them out. It seems like they took a bunch of Squire fretted necks and just buzzed them down to the fingerboard and then used something over the ebanol to smooth it down. But on mine and every other one I've played you can feel the fret very, very slightly under your finger. Now that I'm about to switch necks it's bugging me. Anyone ever heard of this kind of issue? What do you suggest to solve it? Would a thin coat or two of epoxy or other liquid be the answer?

Much appreciative of any direction in this.

Thanks : )

It's not a 'buzzed down' fretted neck, those are lines of inlay material for intonation. If one is sitting high, it might just be unseated, or maybe just needs to be filed down a bit.

Radiused sanding block will fix that problem. Or if you don't mind having no radius just use a cheap flat Block. I prefer little to no radius so fretless neck work is easy for me:P
