Getting grease/oil out of wood?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just bought a new aftermarket maple neck and i think it may be unfinished. As a result, the natural oil of my fingers has left some sort of wet stain in parts of the wood, visible when you shine it against the light. Does anyone have any tips to fix this? Do you think i should go about finishing the neck?

Edit: I didnt know where this thread should go.

It might be a satin finish, I have the same 'issue' with that.
It starts out looking like normal satin finish but after a few weeks the whole backside of the neck looks like a gloss finish because of all the grease.

Haven't got the slightest clue as to what to do about it though.

You need to find out from the seller if there is any finish on the neck. It sounds like there isn't; otherwise, it wouldn't have gotten stained by your sweaty hands so quickly.

You might try to clean the grease off with some naptha. In the US, that is sold in liquor stores and such as "Ronsonol Lighter Fuel," I don't know what you have in The Land Down Under. It is also sold in paint stores. It's a pretty good solvent, evaporates quickly and cleanly, and is pretty benign for any finish. Or you might need to sand it down lightly with 400 grit or higher to remove the stain, and then apply a finish.

What kind of finish to apply is a whole other topic.

Oh, and WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE YOU PLAY!
