Getting rid of ringing/multiple pitches when tapping

Sign in to disble this ad
For some reason when i tap, especially higher up on the neck and on the smaller strings, it makes a chiming sound against multiple frets...do i need to adjust my trussrod or what? Does this mean i need more relief? I've already turned the truss rod over one full revolution, i'm scared to do any more....anyone that has any ideas let me know, thanks.

I do not know the answer to the question and I've noticed this on every bass I've ever played. A longtime guitar playing friend and I discussed this a bit over the weekend and came to the conclusion it's a matter of physics and just has to be that way.

I'm curious to see where this thread goes...

I'm not sure if what I tried to explain in this video is what you're talking about, so please let me know if it helps or not.

At a once???

That's absolutely nuts, if your neck is still in one piece it's a miracle! You should act with extreme care with the truss rod!

It's impossible to get rid of the extra harmonics you get when you tap by modyfing the bass, here's a simple explanation:

when you fret a note and pluck it, the classic way, you're making the string vibrate only one way (from the fretted note to the bridge), but when you tap a note, you're making it vibrate the two ways, from the fretted note to the bridge, and to the nut, and the pickup will take some of that harmonic vibration.

The easiest and most used solution is to put "that thing that you put in the hair to make a horsetail" (don't know how it's called in english lol) on the upper part of the neck so it will kill the upper vibration. Not perfect but useful.
On the other hand, you've got the Batio-patented string muters, but installing this is even as nuts as giving a full turn to your bass's truss rod!

Cheers!
