Getting some buzz on open A

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm getting some buzz on my open A - usually only when I play hard, but it's still there. I've tried winding the string down lower on the tuner but that doesn't do the trick. Any "easy" solutions?

I had the same problem, so I replaced the string retainer with one of these - http://www.guitarpartsresource.com/i...ge/405200C.jpg

Decent suggestion but its a vintage bass so... no new holes. I'm thinking I need to replace the nut.

Since it's vintage you might want to leave the original nut, but do something to raise the A slot.

That's kind of the essence of my question. I'm wondering about a little bit of felt, perhaps rubber... Just wondering if anybody knows of something simple that works.

I have used a tiny piece of masking tape folded to the thickness i need and trimmed with side cutter. The masking tape is close to the nut color so it blends well. How is the action ? Is the neck backbowed slightly? Does raising the A string slightly help?
