Getting tweaked

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm working through the setup on 2 different basses, but am having the same problem with both after market Fender licensed jazz necks. When adjusting the truss rod to set the relief, it seems that the truss nut or ? is not holding it's relief position. I would set the relief say to .020 and then come back the next day and it would be larger. I don't know how many times I've set it, with the same result, can't get the relief to stay in the set position and still have some truss rod adjustment left. Since this problem started, I've even added 2 washers under the nut, because the truss rod nut would seem to bottom out before any relief toward flat was achieved. Any ideas/fixes would be appreciated.

It sounds like what I went thru setting up my squier jazz... Were these cheap necks? I'm convinced (after breaking the rod on a Squier) that some materials used are just too far on the cheap side, and you're gonna have to live with high action. Either the wood is too rubbery, or the rod is made of pig iron, or both. So please, be careful....

I'd be interested to read other reactions to your question...

I'm not recommending my solution below but I had the same problem with a American Deluxe Jazz neck. I like a neck with very little relief and I just couldn't get this neck to comply.

I took the neck off, loosened the truss and set the neck up, frets down, with the nut and the heel on some wood blocks. I added a 5 pound weight to the back of the neck and let it alone for two weeks.

The neck is now a very adjustable neck and I've had no problems in the past several years.
