Godin A5 Fretless lack of sustain on higher notes

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello,
I'm hoping other people who have this bass will be able to help or let me know if this is normal for this bass. I picked up a used Godin A5 Fretless. The one with the Piezo's on each saddle and the midi connection. I like the bass but do find there is very little sustain on the high notes after the 12th fret on the G and D string. Not much more sustain than a ukulele to be quite honest. The action is not low - not high either. I tried regular flat wound, Thomastik acoustic electric strings, and now half wound strings. I have tried adjusting the truss rod and didn't have any luck.

As well I'd like to know what settings you put the sliders (high mid and treble) on when you are recording with the bass. I'm finding a lot of low low boom but I'm convinced it can be adjusted to be a useful sound.

Thanks.

A lack of sustain in the upper registers of a fretless can be seen as a good thing. It means it is behaving more like a string bass (upright acoustic). And a lot of fretless players are looking for that upright sound. FWIW, my Godin fretless Acoustibass (forerunner of your model) behaves this way too.
