Going out of my mind in basses with no deffinition on E

Sign in to disble this ad
So the past 3, 4 string basses i have bought completely lack punch and definition on their E strings. Even when I try all the common fixes, its still there. A rickenbacker, fender, and a lakland are all suffering from this. Although my 5 string warwick and cort with 34" scales do not suffer this. Are 34" scale 4 strings doomed to this. What is the cause? It sucks when you go to play a low note and it sounds like cardboard. UGH!!!!!!!!!! I dont think i can buy any more basses on the internet, which sucks because there always cheaper here. I love everything about my new lakland, but i cannot bear to play the E because it sounds non existent. Does anyone else have this problem, or am i just having sh*t luck finding good basses?

All my basses are 34" scale 4 strings. None of them have that problem and they include a Fender P, a Danelectro DC, an Ibanez SRX300 and others. Have you done any experimentation with strings?

It's obvious. Your left hand technique.

I think that my 4 strings lack something on the low notes when I run my amps EQ flat. I need to roll off some low low's and add some low mids to get what I consider definition out of my low E. I cut about 3 dB at 40 Hz, and add about 3 to 5 dB at 60 Hz, 100 Hz, and 180 Hz, and run the rest flat. You've probably already tried different EQ'ing options, but that's my $.02

Funny pic, unfortunatly a mini amp is not the cause of my problems (im playing with a 500w 2x10 and 1x15). Well some thing i have tried, are change of strings, general set up (check nut, relief, intonation, pickup height, proper break angle of string on nut), making sure the string isnt twisted, making sure the bushings are not loose or anything else that might be absorbing energy. I Have not involved a luthier just because ive been doing set ups on my basses since i started playing, and do them well. Lakland said they want to see the bass, im hoping that they can do something about it. Luckly im in chicago and can just swing by and drop it off. EQing i have tried, but the basses have a problem with them without even being plugged in, so EQ doesnt really help much. Ile try to post a recording of what im hearing in the next few days.

agreed, sometimes it's the amps fault

been tinkering with home-made systems. My most recent dabble resulted in thunderous sounds that sounded a lot lower than what I was actually playing.

Long story short, I was satisfied

I've posted this at least 3 times before...worth doing again...

WITNESS POINT! WITNESS POINT! WITNESS POINT!

when you string your bass...after you tune it up, you MUST press down HARD on the string just in front of the bridge...this will set a clean witness point on your string and it will go a LONG way to bring out the definition on any string...especially E's and B's...

some folks recommend doing this just in front of the nut, too...for the same reason...

try it...it'll take all of 2 minutes to do...

I have a cheapo bass that I picked up for $80 on ebay, and I have it tuned BEAD and all 4 strings are clear and articulate...when I first put the B on the bass, I was unimpressed...after doing this, it made a HUGE difference!
