Good bass tech in Toronto?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello TBers,

I got a 2000 MIA Fender P that is great but needs a new output jack, I think so anyway because anytime I move or twist the cable there is a loud crackle and it is not good for my amp. And I have tried other cables.

The thing is that this is really my only bass, she's a beauty and I want someone who will do a top notch job, but also someone who can do it very quickly... Even if I could drop it off and pick it up the same day, it isn't necessarily urgent and I would setup an appointment before hand.

So is there any good tech that someone could recommend? I've heard good things about Club Bass (though their service price is $75 an hour, which seems high to me for this), and I've also heard about the 12th Fret. I do not wish to bring this to Steve's or L&M.

Thanks,

Matt

*** I think I fixed the issue... I tightened up the nut on the jack, took off the pickguard and looked at the jack's components. The wiring looks good, so I bent the terminal(?) closer towards the jack, and wiped the contact point with a dry Q-Tip. Now I can twirl the cable and I don't hear anymore static. But if anyone could still list some good techs for myself if I need one down the road or just for others, thanks.

$75 per hour is the going rate in Toronto for quality tech work. But the kind of thing you are talking about would probably run to the minimum charge - typically $25.

Yeah, I was thinking after I posted that that I should call them for a quote, but I was more determined to try and fix it myself.

It still crackles a bit, but it takes a lot more movement and it isn't nearly as loud as it was, but I think I'll give them a shout if needed. As posted above, I have heard good things about them.

Thanks

There are lots of "good techs" in Toronto, but there are only a few great techs.... your location in T.O. would help to narrow things down... and given that your problem is realtively minor, an "average" tech should be able to do it fairly easily and at a fair price... but if you feel that you must have the best in town, you should contact Dave at Club Bass... and the 12th fret has a minimum of 2 weeks backlog, probably more. But they are very good!

Give Frank Toth at The Tuning Fork a call at 416-235-0020. He does excellent work and is very reasonable and fast.

He's located on The Queensway across the street from Club Bass in Etobicoke.
