lol...I do all of my own tech stuff!...pretty easy once you have done a handful. Soldering irons are pretty cheap, as are set-up tools
The only thing i dont do is Luthier stuff
-re-frets
-removal of a fretboard
-binding
-bridge repair (acoustics)
etc

| | | I just had my Fender Geddy Lee Jazz bass set up by Patrick Nelson, he is also located Park Slope/Windsor Terrace area in Brooklyn NY. He did a great job, the neck had to be straightened quite a bit and he adjusted action at bridge and nut and now the action is sweet. I would highly recommend Patrick, his prices are very reasonable and he's simply a great guy to deal with.

I need a pretty extensive neck repair and have been perusing the forum looking for the right person. I've sent off some emails today, but it can't hurt to continue my search in the waiting period for a response. |

He was the Doobie Bros gtr tech for many years. He's reworked my two Fender basses beautifully.
I've also played over a dozen different guitars (electric and acoustic) and basses he's worked on for friends of mine, just amazing work because some of those were train wrecks until he got them.

| | This is what happens, Larry... | | Join Date: Feb 2000 Location: Cleveland, OH. | | I'll throw my info up for Cleveland, OH area.
Personally, I haven't found anyone local I trust to touch my stuff, which is a shame. But that's helped me to become fairly decent at minor tech stuff.
Name: Adam Falkner Business Name: ACF Custom Guitars Hours: Whenever Address: Fairview Park, OH (at my house)
Greater Cleveland area Telephone: email me Email: rojo412@yahoo.com Specialties:
Installing preamps, pickups, switching.
Setups, restrings, and overhauls.
"Un-relicing" (aka, making things look less beat up and play nicer)
Consultation for upgrades, mods.
Fixing stripped strap button holes.
Getting rid of fret edges that poke out.
Neck refinishing with TruOil.
Bridge/Tuner installs
Things like refrets, crowning, refinishing... I've dabbled in, but am not very comfortable with. If I can't do it, I'll tell you I can't do it (and don't charge to do so).
But most of the people I have helped out have been very happy with the results.
And I sometimes work for beer... so that's a bonus!
If you'd like my help, PM or email and we can chat about your project.

Not a bass tech specifically - he actually builds and sells his own gypsy-jazz acoustic guitars, but also offers repairs, adjustments and setups. Honest, friendly and full of useful advice. Contact details and pricing should be available on the website.

Only person that will touch my instruments now. If I can't do it, Jeremy will. He's also the tech for several of my friends in the Sacramento area.

Here's one for the NW of England: Name: Steve Robinson Location: Sale, Manchester (UK) Website: http://www.manchesterguitartech.co.uk/
Maintenance, setups, repairs, upgrades etc. For me, he's finished off my resto on a WEM Rapier bass, repaired a neck crack in my Jim Reed BE5 (*) and installed a Graphtech Ghost Piezo system into my defretted Fenix Jazz. That last one, in case you're wondering how much effort's involved, is on his blog: http://www.manchesterguitartech.co.u...nix-jazz-bass/
He doesn't do more than is necessary, unless asked, so no nasty surprises. IIRC, the WEM was £40 incl flats, necessary fret tweaking and setup to the best an interestingly constructed 60s English bass could be. Similar for filling in + smoothing the neck crack and the £180 for the Ghost work (I bought the system, plus a Fender 60s bridge pup) included new D'ad flats, pots + knobs (1 concentric) + Switchcraft stereo jack parts.
(*) Cautionary tale. I came home to find my son and his chums "jamming" on my stuff. One chum sheepishly lifted off my BE5 and dropped it, head first, onto the floor - hence the crack (on a thru neck). Tested my "don't worry, not your fault, who wants chicken nuggets?" hospitality somewhat. |

Jim is a little pricier than the rest of the Luthiers in the city , but well worth it . Very personable gentleman, always willing to shoot the breeze with you and usually tell you more about your instrument than you know yourself. Jim does top quality set up, resto and repair work. I understand he does most of the emergency work and some setup work for the big name acts that come through town , worth a look if you need some work done . You may have to wait a bit because Jim is just that busy , but he will work with you if you need it on the quick as well. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
