Good Vintage Looking Tuners for an 09 Fender AS Jazz Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys I was wondering if there any good tuners out that are vintage fender looking and that work good.

The stock tuners that are on there right now work great, but I've always love the 50' 60's tuners. The just look awesome!

I really don't want to go over $100 but if i go over a little bit it won't hurt.

Thanks for the input guys!

Those are the Gotoh GB8; standard issue on all Fender American Vintage and most Custom Shop basses. I don't think they're really any better than what you've currently got on your AS, as the AS tuners are already pretty decent quality.

The GB8s are a good tuner, and aesthetically the most accurate reproduction of the original Kluson reverse tuners. However, they're heavy, and are usually stiff turning. Another thing to consider is when you mount the GB8s on a neck, you need to drill shallow relief "divots" into the back face of the headstock. The divots provide clearance for the the tuner's pinch tabs, allowing the tuner to lie flat against the headstock. The GB640s don't require this mod; they're a much more direct bolt-on.

The GB640 is basically an updated, lightweight version of the GB8. Order GBR640s for the true reverse-turning action; order GB640s for non-reverse turning action.

If you opt to go with the Fender/Gotoh GB8s, shop around—they can be had for less than in your link.

What size tuner posts/bushings are used on your bass?

I just checked out some 2010 American Standards on Ebay, and checked some dimensions on your current tuners.

It appears that the existing tuner post holes in your headstock would need to be opened up a bit—to 11/16" diameter. Then the vintage-style tuner bushings can be pressed in. The tricky part is that you need to open up those holes with a reamer, not a drill. Shouldn't be much trouble for a decent luthier.

If you wanted to do the install yourself, you could get some pretty good advice over in the Luthier's Corner here on TB, but for my money, I'd have it done by a pro.

Good luck

hard to say about the cost.
best to call around, as luthiers, in my experience, can vary significantly in their rates.

cheers!

the key point here is that your keys are lightweight and vintage-style keys are not; this can mean the difference between the bass hanging where it belongs and diving to the floor as soon as you let go of the neck.

i wouldn't mess with them.

I love the look of the vintage, long-stemmed tuners--especially from the back. Aesthetically, they are THE classic look. A little powdered graphite loosens them right up. Screw the weight thing; I'm 59 years old, play every weekend, and can't understand all this "my bass is too heavy" talk. What's an ounce or two to look good? Just saying.

Yeah man they are awesome! I've always loved them! I was going to buy a reissue for them but then I thought I would wait and buy the tuners myself.

I'm going to get them on next week. I'll post a pic then.
