Got rid of my hum

Sign in to disble this ad
Situation: used jazz clone bass from GC. Great neck and feel, sound too, except when you soloed the bridge pickup (slight hum). 'Nother problem: input jack on guitar not holding 1/4" cable tightly, as a result I'm pushing the cable back in every so often.
Solution: Go to local electronics store, buy a new 1/4" jack. Total cost something like $1.29

Around 2 a.m. last night I decide to take out the old pencil soldering iron and get to work. Now I'm no Thomas Edison so I mark the white wire-black wire positions from the old jack on the new. Snip the wires (like disarming a bomb), tin the wire ends, solder, cool, try the repair -- it works!! And coincedentally, the hum from the soloed bridge pu is gone.

Try it. If I can do it it's easy.

I have a cyber cookie for you

also you should let the solder joint cool by itself and not "cool" it because that would weaken the joint

thanks bud. Yeah I let it cool all on its' own.

slow to heat but quick to cool down -- that's my motto and my soldering style.
