Gotoh 201 question

Sign in to disble this ad
Should the Gotoh 201 baseplate be made of solid metal or should there be a hollowed-out part at the back, you know, where the strings go through.I just bought one for my Squier VM Jazz on the basis that it was solid substantial unit, only to find that the bit that LOOKS really chunky,is in fact hollow. Is this normal,or is there something not quite right?

Thanx my friend.I guess I just needed to hear (read?) someone else say that theirs was the same, although it does sort of detract from the chunky solid image of the bridge.I felt the same as you,as though it was a fake of some sort. You can't help but wonder why, tho'.Surely it would be easier to make the baseplate in 1 solid lump, which would make it even more sturdy.

I bought one for my VM Fretless as well...I was a smidge disappointed by the size of it...I thought it was going to be a bit bigger, just under the size of a BA, but it works well and added some needed sustain. I would go with a BA if I had it to do over, but again, sounds and works well enough.

Well,it's installed and I must say,its fine.Sustain is slightly improved and it looks good. One thing tho'.The saddles are practically as low as they can go without bottoming out.If I preferred a very low action then I would have to consider shimming the neck.Probably the result of the fatter saddles on the 201.Happy enough tho'.Thanx guys.
