| Gotoh 201 - Shim or replace saddles?

I have a gotoh 201 bridge coming in for my jazz bass and i hear that because the bridge and saddles are thicker, it will be hard to get my action nice and low. Ive heard some people say to just shim the neck whilst other say they replaced the saddles with their old fender ones.
Which of these options do you think will be the better one? On one hand, i dont overly like the idea of putting something between the body and neck because contact won't be as direct. On the other hand, it seems a little redundant to buy a new bridge and replace the saddles on it.
