Gotoh 201 vs. Gotoh "Heavy Duty"?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have two MIM Jazz basses. One has a Badass II bridge and I'm looking to upgrade the bridge on the other (the only necessary upgrade for these basses ,IMO).

I love the Badass II, but its a bit pricey. I have done alot of research on the 201 and it seems likes it will fit my needs at 1/3 of the cost.

To get to the original question. Before ordering,I replied to an ad on CL with a guy selling a Gotoh "Heavy Duty" bridge for the same price it would be for the 201+shipping. They look identical, but he said they are different.

I cannot find any information on this model, can anyone steer me in the right direction?

Go with the 201, it's a great bridge. Very simple, sturdy and reliable. Forget the mystery bridge, go with the tried and true 201.

Look at the Stew-Mac website, I believe that is the NON 201 standard bridge - not as nice as the 201...

Thanks dudes for the quick replies. I'm gonna go and order the 201, as I originally wanted.

I play with an aggressive fingerstyle, and cannot use a stock fender bridge as I pull the saddle out from under the E.

I hope this does the trick!

...and good luck finding a chrome 201 bridge, seems every place I tried was back-ordered until the middle of May. I ended up going with black hardware, just so I could finish putting my bass together.

In my 201 search I did see a similar bridge, check the grooves in the baseplate for the saddle height adjustment screws. The 201 has one for each screw, the other may only have the 2 outside ones.

Yeah, I just noticed that... I was thinking the same thing, but I'm gonna wait it out for the chrome. Until then, I'll keep using this bass for recording and practice, and my Badass II-equipped bass for live.
