Gotoh Bridge Problems?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I hear all the hype about the BAII bridge, however, it is more expensive (especially if you include shop filing of the slots) than a Gotoh and it looks a lot bigger and out of place on the Fender Jazz. I don't mind the current Fender bridge, however, it does buzz and I hate that. So I'm looking at the Gotoh bridge. Are there any known problems with these? Will it eliminate the buzz that the MIM Fender's are plagued with? I can get it for $45 shipped. Anything else I need to know?

Edit: Added MIM note.

It's the bridge that is buzzing. Not fret buzz. I can stop the buzz if I reach down to the fender bridge and PUSH the two ends of the rollers back into alignment with the axis of the fretboard, if I described that clearly.

Reasons I think I need a replacement:

-Buzz at the bridge saddles
-Saddle screws come loose
-Spring rattles
-Stripped action height adjustment screws
-Strings fall out of saddle slots (rarely but it happens more often on the E string)

Reasons I think the Gotoh will fit my needs:
-Similar to the Fender Bridge (minus buzz, correct?)
-Not as big and square as the BAII (correct?)
-Cheaper than a BAII (including the cost of slotting the BA saddles)
-It's a MIM Fender, not really looking at 'pimping' it.
Overall: I want to upgrade my bridge but maintain the ability for low action, eliminate buzz, and increase stability. (already have great sustain, not sure about attack)

Comments?

Oh yeah, I didn't mean to badmouth Fender bridges, but a lot of people who have bough Made in Mexico Standard Basses seem to complain a lot about the "crap bridge."

Yeah, I was looking for basically confirmation that going with a Gotoh bridge would be an upgrade from the current stock bridge and I wouldn't just be spending money to have a repeat of the current problem. I like the current style and tone of the bridge on there, just don't want the buzz. I also wanted to make sure the Gotoh wasn't as enourmous (so it seems ) as the BA. Thanks, I'll read up some more on the Gotoh in posts then have the guitar shop put it on when I have them do a setup.

Is there a particular reason you would recommend the 206?
From the diagram it doesn't look like it has 5 mounting holes

The Gotoh 201 is a direct fender replacement - there's a link on the same page, it's also cheaper than the 206 For a standard fender it looks like what you need.

I have a 201 that I've put on and pulled off a couple different basses. And here's why: the 201 has big saddles, bigger than standard Fender bridge saddles and if you are shooting for a really low set-up there's only so far down you can go with those big boys. But, I just started a new projects and we'll see how it works on a warmoth neck and body deal I got going.

I like the replacement bridges that basspartsresources sells (I think they are Allparts) they are not different from standard Fender only more sturdy.

Cool, I was just wondering if the 206 had a particular advantage over the 201 (assuming you didn't want to change the spacing).

Thanks guys, I had it figured out though that I needed the 201. Now for the final question:
Is the Gotoh smaller in dimensions than the BAII? The BAII seems large and out of place to me, kind of like Vin Diesel... anywhere.

I got the dimensions for the Gotoh: 80mm x 51mm but what about the BAII? I hear the BAII won't fit under an 'ashtray' but I don't use one anyway so...

What if I just use the gotoh bridge, but use the Old Fender saddles on the new Gotoh? hmmm hmmm?
