Grease from thumb results in black shades on neck

Sign in to disble this ad
So, the title pretty much sums up the problem.
I've posted this also in the spector club a while ago, and despite the advice there's still no result. Since i don't want to take it to a tech (and pay..) please tell me some ways to get rid of this. I've tried cleaning it with almost anything!

edit: I know the pic isn't the best, but you can see what i mean just before the headstock.

Sure, but that's not an option when in a gig is it?

Won't this damage the satin finish?

I've used steel wool to make a glossy finish duller, like a satin finish; so using it on a satin finish should be just fine. **Just don't overdo it.**

I keep a rag/old T-shirt on my guitar stand and constantly wipe my bass in-between songs. It not only protects the finish on your bass, but it will also help your string life.

if the staining you have has somehow bled through the finish - you're likely out of luck. Bodily fluids have a way of seeping into wood and never coming out.

Every place I gig has a lavatory.

You can always paint the neck black.

Mojo only applies to Fenders - on everything else it's just damage

Once it's stained...well, I haven't found anything that worked on the Sterling I got in a trade...I was SO pissed too -- beautifully figured maple, but it seems like it's got a light gray haze over it...I scrubbed it down with 0000, and some cleaners, but they only cleaned the surface.

Proactively, there may be oil finishes that you can put on that don't hamper your playing, but that protect the wood without altering its color.

You could also experiment with this:

http://home.howstuffworks.com/how-to...-furniture.htm

But I might find a beater to try that out on first...

If you sweat a lot when playing, then, as others said, wipe down the neck frequently.

If this becomes a matter of obsession, you can wage war on your sweaty hands:
