Handguard or no Handguard???

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all... Just bought a Carvin B-50 and am thinking of putting a handguard on it. I don't think it will get in the way of where my hands are for regular playing or slapping.

Would love to hear from some folks who have experience using a hand guard, pros vs. cons, etc...

Thanks!

I call them pickup covers. I like plucking different areas of the string depending on how I want to shape the tone, and these limit my options, just get in my way. So they don't work for me.

Although it worked great for Jamerson

It's strictly individual. If it doesn't get in your way and you like the look, go for it. You can always trial mount a cover with two-sided sticky foam.

Pro's:
- can add body weight to a poorly balanced bass.
- looks cool with some basses
- can be a good thumb/hand rest

Cons:
- gets in the way
-requires holes to be drilled or tape to be applied.
- can look terrible with some finishes.

I wouldn't cover that finish up at all. Also will probably get in the way since you said you slap.

I absolutely love the look on my Marcus Miller and 75 AVRI, but hate them with a passion. They get in my way. I don't use them.

Now, if your playing style has you playing at one consistent position, that cover can be an asset, but I play from bridge to neck and I hate having to manuever around that thing.

Thanks for all the replies... I love the look, but I don't think I'm going to do it. When you boil it down, it's all about playability, and I don't want it getting in the way...

Thanks!
