| If you can return the instrument and get another i would do that.. I had the same problem with an American 62 reissue p bass..
I even tried pulling back on the headstock to make it easier to tighten the truss rod.
Then one day the truss rod but just spun.. it stripped the threads on the rod itself.
(Yes folks, i do know how to adjust a truss rod, as my hobby i have built bass many years ago and work with Alleva Coppolo Basses in design and setup for a few years. So i know what to do and what not to do)
So i had to have the truss rod replaced by a luthier.. which was very $$$
After it happened I called fender Artist relations guy that i knew for years... he said it wont be covered under warranty... but o go get a warmoth neck and use it on the bass instead.. or i could but a neck from fender but it was going to be alot of $$..
And the artist rep Ritchie Fleigler told me that the warmoth neck would be a better neck anyway...
I could not believe what i was hearing at that time... it was 1994 the bas was about 6 months old at the time.
so i made a pledge to myself t not buy a new fender bass EVER again abd that is when i started working with Jimmy from Alleva Coppolo basses to make a bass that is like a vintage fender but only consistent.
Im sorry to hear about your problem but i would return that bass if you still can and get another one to see if it does not have that defect..
I believe your issue happens when fender is not routing the truss rod channel deep enough in the center so it does not have enough bow for the rod to lay in.. so when you tighten the rod it is basically just pulling tighter and not back on the neck as it should.
