Question Hazy finish on eBay Lakland!?

Sign in to disble this ad

My new Lakland arrived from Ebay today and seems to be in perfect shape...

there's always a catch.

The finish over the quilt top has been buffed flat. It looks like the owner used some kind of abrasive cleaner on the surface so it has swirls all over it and no gloss whatsoever. It makes the quilt maple look like a cheap photo finish because the grain doesn't catch/reflect light!

The back has lots of very light scuffing, but still looks glossy.

What do I do:
  • Is there someway to restore the finish?
  • Does it need a new clearcoat?
  • Should I just try to return the bass?

Like I said other than the finish, the bass looks perfect, no scratches or dings whatsoever.

Please help! Thanks in advance.

Whoa,

Umm, well... is it altered to the point where you wouldnt play it like it is? Did you pay fair resale price, or did you get a deal on it? If I paid average resale, for an instrument in taht condition... I'd demand my money back & send it back ASAP.

The longer you wait, the less likely you'll get yer money back.

BUT...

If you think you might want to keep it, its gonna be tough to judge w/o pictures of the damage. Maybe they didnt take off that much finish, & it might be able to be buffed out? Maybe they took off ALOT of finish, & then it'd need to be re-cleared?

I just opened it up and I'm at work, so I haven't even had a chance to play it yet.

At first blush aside from the finish it's exactly what I want. And the finish isn't even terrible. I didn't even notice based on the ebay pic:

but now I can see that the reflection is a little off on the lower horn.

I got a pretty decent price, about average for what I've seen here & on ebay, & a heck of a lot less than new retail. So, if it's fixable (and plays well when I get home), I'll probably keep it.

Is it unheard of to ask for (and get) some money back based on the condition?

If they didn't disclose that the finish had been altered significantly from how it is normally, then you are entitled to something back, if not a complete refund. I know I wouldn't accept it as is for a price that is average with the same bass that hasn't had the finish altered.

So the guy claims it was like that when he got it two months ago, and he didn't notice. Right.

Past the ugly finish the bass is great. It rock solid, and sounds fantastic.

I'm going to try & get some quotes on a new clear coat. Any idea what I should expect to pay (and ask for back from the purchase)?

Thanks again!
